A state of anxiety and tension afflicts some patients when the dentist informs them of the need to extract one of their molars, for fear that this medical procedure will have negative effects on their dental health.

The risks of tooth extraction

In this context, Dr. Marwan Abdel-Gawad, a dental specialist, pointed out the necessity of installing or implanting another molar following the extraction of the infected molar, to avoid serious damage.

Marwan added that the vacuum left by the extraction of the molar in the jaw may lead to the movement of the teeth inward or outward, which negatively affects their shape, in addition to suffering from mismatch, which causes great difficulty in chewing food.

He explained that some patients may suffer from bacterial infections in the nerves surrounding the teeth following the extraction of the epithelium, so the doctor is keen to prescribe antibiotics to combat infection.

And according to the “News-medical” website, there are other risks of tooth extraction, including:

1- Osteitis

After the extraction of the tooth, a blood clot forms in its position, if left untreated for a long time, the patient may develop osteitis.

2- Nerve injury

It is possible that the nerve under the molar may be injured during the extraction process, which leads to a feeling of numbness or pain in its place.

3- Perforation of the maxillary sinus

Extraction of the upper molars is associated with the risk of perforation in the maxillary sinus, but it is not a cause for concern, as the doctor can easily fix it.

Advice following tooth extraction

Marwan stressed that there are instructions that the patient must adhere to following a molar extraction, most notably:

– Quitting smoking, because it hinders the healing process of the wound resulting from the extraction of the tooth.

Brush your teeth gently.

– Take the medicines prescribed by the doctor on time, without prejudice to the doses.

Do not use mouthwash until 24 hours following the tooth extraction.

– Avoid chewing food following the extraction of the tooth and suffice with liquids.

Avoid drinking hot or cold liquids.
