What is an ovarian cyst?

The ovarian cyst is a small abnormal mass, which develops at the level of the ovaries and which is most often benign. It is said :

  • functional and regresses spontaneously in 90% of cases,
  • or organic and does not regress.

Benign cyst and tumour: two notions

Benign cysts also called “functional cysts” can in some cases evolve in size and rupture or tumor, hence the importance of being checked and verifying that this “abnormal” mass at the level of an ovary disappears well following three menstrual cycles “, recommends Dr. Alexandra Dalu. This monitoring will be followed with a pelvic and/or endovaginal ultrasound examination by a gynecologist. In the event of complications or cancer cells detected, this cyst must be surgically removed. However, women can be reassured: in the majority cases, the cysts are benign.

The causes of an ovarian cyst

“5 to 7% of women develop an ovarian cyst in their lifetime” (source 1). Among the variable causes:

  • taking ovarian stimulating drugs used during medically assisted procreation (PMA). In this case, several cysts can coexist,
  • the administration of tamoxifen (an anti-cancer drug sometimes prescribed following breast cancer),
  • the taking of certain pills, in particular microdoses or the installation of a hormonal IUD containing levonorgestrel,
  • the genetic factor,
  • hormonal imbalance (endometriosis, amenorrhea, etc.),
  • the persistence of immature cells in the ovary.

Do ovarian cysts make you fat and why?

In some cases yes, the ovarian cyst can cause weight gain. This is due to several factors.

  • The ovarian cyst can produce androgen hormones which can lead to increased abdominal weight, acne, hirsutism, alopecia, menstrual disorders, prediabetes.
  • The ovarian cyst can cause bloating and fluid retention, which can result in an increase in height and weight.
  • The ovarian cyst can interfere with the basic metabolism, which can thus lead to chronic weight gain and disorders of menstruation and fertility.

How to limit or stop weight gain linked to an ovarian cyst?

To stop weight gain linked to an ovarian cyst, the nutritionist, gynecologist or endocrinologist can prescribe a medical protocol. “A protocol in which we will find, for example, the prescription anti-androgen birth control pills (drospirenone and dienogest), an interesting anti-androgen and metabolic regulator to correct and put the ovaries to rest. Moreover, the use of certain herbal supplements (fruits of chaste tree, yam, lady’s mantle) is interesting to limit the appearance of ovarian cyst or to reduce its size and its symptoms”. explains Dr. Alexandra Dalu.

“However, it is important to emphasize that not all ovarian cysts cause weight gain and that in the event of excess weight, this can also be the result of an unbalanced diet, lack of physical exercise or another disease (hypothyroidism, diabetes, heart failure, etc.) which in all cases can find a personalized solution…” adds Dr. Alexandra Dalu.

Polycystic ovary syndrome: another disease: what consequences on weight gain?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by irregular or absent periods, and often overweight, or even android obesity due to high levels of male hormones (androgens). The latter, produced in excessive quantities, can indirectly lead to weight gain, especially in the abdominal region. But here too, this symptom will vary according to several parameters.
