At the end of the Ubisoft Forward, the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise seems regarding to take on almost unreasonable proportions. But among all the episodes announced, there is one that makes some players cringe a little…

From Tsushima to Assassin’s Creed Red

Since its release in summer 2020 on PlayStation 4, Ghost of Tsushima only made people happy. Acclaimed by the press and by players, the title of Sucker Punch certainly borrowed a lot from the formula of Assassin’s Creed and other open world action games, but above all, he had managed to acquire elements that were sufficiently unique and relevant to give him his own identity.. The balance between action, infiltration and exploration were perfectly mastered, as were the narrative part and the choices in terms of artistic direction.

Back a year later in publishing Director’s CutGhost of Tsushima really marked the players on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. So much so that many had expressed themselves to say that, if an episode of the Assassin’s Creed saga had dared to set its sights on feudal Japan (as certain rumors foreshadowed at some point), he would never have shown so much inventiveness and efficiency. From there, the idea of seeing the Ubisoft teams rub shoulders with the title of Sucker Punch seemed highly unlikely… until this advert made during the Ubisoft Forward.

Choice of timing and epidermal reactions

This project, which we no longer hoped to see materialize, will therefore see the light of day under the provisional name of: Assassin’s Creed Codename Red. But this announcement did not arouse only enthusiastic reactions from Internet users. On Twitter, many Ghost of Tsushima fans make fun of the timing more or less kindly chosen by Ubisoft.

Ubisoft: we will never make an “Assassin’s Creed” in Japan… Ghost of Tsushima becomes a resounding success… Ubisoft announces Assassin’s Creed Codename Red.

I still remember a few years ago Ubisoft saying they would never make an Assassin’s Creed game set in feudal Japan because it was “too cliched”, even though the setting was perfect for it. I wonder what made them change their minds, surely it wasn’t the success of Ghosts of Tsushima.

For many it is obvious that the publisher has changed its tune by noting the incredible enthusiasm of the players around the release of Ghost of Tsushima… while waiting for the phenomenon to drop a little before announcing its own title anchored in feudal Japan. Whether or not the development of this Assassin’s Creed Codename Red was impacted by the success of Sucker Punch’s title, it is clear that Ubisoft will have to redouble its creativity to offer software that is both more than a simple clone and that manages to make us forget the slap inflicted by Ghost of Tsushima.

Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is announced for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
