Psoriatic arthritis is one of the chronic health problems, which may hinder the patient from performing his daily life normally, and this is likely to affect the eyes.
In the following lines, “Consulto” explains the effect of psoriatic arthritis on the eyes, and ways to prevent it, according to the “Everydayhealth” and “Healthline” websites.
How does psoriatic arthritis affect the eye?
People with rheumatoid arthritis can develop eye inflammation, often swelling that may develop in different parts of the body as a result of an immune response, which over time can cause chronic inflammation that may lead to vision loss in severe cases.

Some research suggests that the same inflammation that causes joint problems in people with psoriatic arthritis can also cause damage to other areas of the body, including the eyes.
Dry eyes, pain and conjunctivitis are common problems associated with psoriatic arthritis, and a less frequent psoriatic eye condition is inflammation in the middle layer of the eye, known as the iris, which can lead to permanent eye damage and vision loss if left untreated. However, it can be treated effectively if diagnosed early.
The effects of psoriatic arthritis on the eyes
1- conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, known as pink eye, is a swelling or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.

Itchy red eyes due to conjunctivitis are more common among people with psoriasis, with some research published in February 2017 in the “Open Access Text” indicating that more than 60% of psoriasis patients have conjunctivitis.
2- Uveitis
Uveitis is inflammation that begins in the grapes, the part of the eye located between the retina, the inner layer of the eye and the outer white layer of the eye, and if left untreated, it can eventually lead to vision loss, as the Arthritis Foundation monitors regarding 7% of psoriatic arthritis patients develop with uveitis.
