Documentary film on the program Art in Public Space

Hamburg is celebrating 41 years of art in public space this year. Since the early 1980s, Hamburg has developed into one of the most important places for art in public space with numerous projects and works of art. The filmmaker Helena Wittmann, who has just celebrated great success at the Locarno Film Festival, among other things, shot a 30-minute film regarding art in public space in Hamburg in the summer of 2022. The history of art in public space is told through interviews with key protagonists and exemplary works of art.

Spaces in Helena Wittmann’s films are far more than just places of action. She questions and contextualizes the boundaries of these spaces and creates a unique atmosphere of light, sound and people. In the film commissioned by the Ministry for Culture and Media, a thoughtful, optimistic documentary regarding the public space and exemplary works of art in Hamburg was created. After the premiere, the film will be available on the Culture and Media Agency’s website www.hamburg.de/bkm/kunst be available. This page will also be redesigned in the coming weeks to mark the anniversary of “41 years of art in public space”.

dr Nora Sternfeld, Professor of Art Education at the HFBK, will hold the speech. She publishes on contemporary art, educational theory, exhibitions, historical politics and anti-racism and was a documenta professor in Kassel from 2018-2020.

dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media: “How can you use public space beyond commercial structures in such a way that it invites you to meet and exchange ideas? As a space in which one can meet freely and spontaneously and take on new perspectives on social challenges? In the past 41 years, the Art in Public Space program has addressed this question in very different ways. The development of the program also tells a lot regarding how the public, how art and culture and how the mutual interaction have changed over the decades. The question for us today is: how do we further develop the art in public space program in a contemporary way and what opportunities for public discourse does this result in? The film provides important food for thought here.”
