Docty, the digital medicine initiative arrived in Putumayo to solve access barriers

The provision of health services in rural Colombia has several difficulties. Cultural and economic factors are barriers that arise when offering access to the country’s health network. However, one of the biggest obstacles in a country like Colombia ends up being geographic accessibility. A situation that is replicated in the Department of Putumayo.

On the other hand, the greater reach that the virtual platforms of the Promoter Entities have from Health (EPS) or the Institutions Providers of Health Services (IPS), is to offer the possibility that its users make requests or put requirements to be attended in person.

In order to extend health services so that people who live in rural areas have the guarantee of access to the needs that they demand before their EPS, Docty The objective was to create first and second level digital hospitals equipped with digital laboratories so that users can be cared for without the complications that travel entails for many.

How does Docty work?

This healthtech groups actors and ecosystem services of health in Colombia to, through the support of technology, bring access to health to the most remote places. This is how it connects healthcare workers with patients.

“What we do is place, at a certain point where there is an Internet connection, some devices that have the objective of developing a teleconsultation between the patient and a doctor attached to the department’s Health Secretariat,” explained Opo Herrera, CEO and co-founder of Docty for Latin America.

In Putumayo, the process is being implemented since September, allowing to save time and displacements to the inhabitants of the department. It should be noted that the care offered by Docty includes taking laboratory tests, that can be done at the time of the appointment. For this, Docty has some kits that have the capacity to process urine, blood, multimedia samples, as well as electrocardiograms, ultrasounds, among other services. In turn, the vital signs can be read in real time by the doctor.

“A person in a rural area can have a consultation without having to attend the IPS and perform the corresponding exams automatically,” Herrera said.

This healthtech will work with four IPS that provide the service in the department. Similarly, while the project progresses, more health institutions will join. By 2024, when this pilot plan will conclude, Docty is projected to have a positive impact on the lives of 5,000 people.
