Doctors who left scissors in a patient are arrested

The doctors who intervened on the patient Iván Chávez, who had scissors left inside his body, are detained at the headquarters of the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps in Maracaibo.

The information was confirmed by Dr. Alfonsina Romero; director of the University Hospital of Maracaibo, a health center where doctors Luis Gómez, Gerardo Núñez and Evert Colina work.

“On the 1st of this month; The Fourth Homicide Prosecutor was at the hospital requesting the patient’s medical history and the list of all those who participated in that shift. They were all summoned to the Cicpc to testify and they left the three boys; then they came out that they were requesting an arrest warrant, ”said the doctor.

Gómez, Núñez and Colina operated on 59-year-old Iván Chávez at the Maracaibo University Hospital on March 20 following presenting with inflammatory diverticulitis. Four days later they noticed that a surgical scissors remained in the patient’s abdomen. The patient died following a second intervention.

Attorney General Tarek William Saab requested, this April 1, an arrest warrant once morest the three doctors.

“The Public Ministry requested an arrest warrant once morest Luis Gómez, Gerardo Núñez and Evert Colina, doctors at the University Hospital of Maracaibo: by causing the death of a citizen due to malpractice by leaving a surgical clip inside his body,” the prosecutor wrote in his twitter account.
