Doctors said that Bruce Lee, who is considered the legend of kung fu until now, died of drinking too much water, nearly 50 years following his death.

The Hollywood martial arts star passed away at the age of 32, in 1973 while he was in Hong Kong, according to the British Daily Mail.

An autopsy revealed at the time that Bruce Lee died of brain swelling, and some doctors believed that this may have occurred as a result of taking a pain reliever, and others thought that he had suffered an acute sunstroke.

Now, researchers have reviewed the evidence, indicating that Bruce Lee died of hyponatremia, or the inability of the kidneys to excrete excess water.

The researchers wrote: “We believe that Bruce Lee died of a specific form of impaired renal function, which is the inability to excrete an adequate amount of water to maintain the body’s water balance, and this leads to hyponatremia, cerebral edema (swelling of the brain) and death within hours if it was Excess water intake is not matched by excretion of water in the urine, which is in line with the timeline that occurred with Bruce Lee’s death.”

Bruce Lee had admitted that he had taken a dose of cannabis before his death, and it was found that consuming cannabis greatly increases the feeling of thirst and the need for water.

Symptoms of hyponatremia include nausea or vomiting, low blood pressure, loss of energy, muscle weakness, twitching or cramping, insomnia, bad mood, headache, fatigue, seizures or coma.
