doctors less empathetic than a robot!

  • Robots rated higher than doctors for their answers

This is the disturbing finding of a recent study conducted on the performance of an artificial intelligence program dedicated to health issues.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been talked regarding a lot, especially since the arrival of ChatGPT. If its irruption in daily life has only just begun, it is already widely used in medicine; in L’interpretation imagery, for example, with results often superior to the human. But its “skills” might go beyond technical aspects alone, as this recent American study (1) suggests: it carried out a comparative evaluation of medical answers made by doctors, then by a program assisted by artificial intelligence (a chatbot assisted by ChatGPT)to questions taken from a forum.

The answers were then anonymized and randomly presented to doctors or artificial intelligence. Each of the 195 answers was the subject of a triple rating by a team of health professionals, from which it appears that the evaluators preferred the answer of the chatbot to that of the doctor in… 79% of the cases !

The height of irony: it is on the chapter of empathy, even more than on that of the technical quality of the answers, that the AI makes the biggest difference! Proof that there are efforts to be made on pedagogy in the relationship with the patient and for a more humane medicine… An area in which AI might paradoxically support doctors, according to the co-author of the study Pr Dredze, by helping to train them in a more patient-centered communicationand allowing them to be more efficient et to provide faster, more targeted care.
