Peter Capaldi Explains Why Another Doctor Who Run Just Isn’t Happening
He gave fans three exceptional seasons as the Twelfth Doctor, but Peter Capaldi has made it unequivocally clear that he won’t be revisiting the iconic role anytime soon.
In a recent interview with Hello Magazine, the Scottish actor reiterated his stance on returning to Doctor Who, confirming he has no plans to reprise the role under any circumstances, be it for anniversary specials, crossovers, or even audio dramas
Capaldi is a self-proclaimed fan of the long-running series but feels that his time as the Doctor has reached a natural conclusion.
"It’s not that I have anything against[[Doctor Who]but there comes a time when you have to leave things alone. I can’t imagine the situation in which I’d be able to go back into it with enough influence over how it was going to be," he explained.
This sentiment echoes previous statements made by Capaldi, who has consistently expressed satisfaction with his three-season run and believes the role has seen its completion for him.
Capaldi’s time as the Doctor coincided with Steven Moffat’s era as showrunner, and together they explored a wide range of emotions and storylines for the character. Capaldi himself believes they managed to cover nearly every facet of the Twelfth Doctor’s personality and experiences, leaving little room for further exploration without risking repetition.
But Capaldi’s impact on the series extends beyond his screen presence. He also played a part in inspiring one of the show’s Christmas specials, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio".
During his travels, Capaldi visited Mexico and found himself deeply affected by the country’s strong connection to the supernatural, time, and death. This experience sparked a creative seed that ultimately blossomed into the episode’s concept.
"They’ve had the show since the 60s," Capaldi recalled, "So they had a very deep kind of relationship with it that’s aligned to the Latin connection with the supernatural, time, and death. That’s where we got Dr Mysterio from, as they call it Doctor Mysterio. I said to Steve that I have to be Doctor Mysterio.”
Fans may be disappointed by Capaldi’s unwavering stance on returning to Doctor Who, but the actor remains dedicated to other projects, and his legacy as the Twelfth Doctor is assured.
What are Peter Capaldi’s reasons for not returning to the role of the Twelfth Doctor?
