Almost nothing is heard of overcrowding, patient transports to other federal states and a lack of intensive care beds. The corona wave has subsided a bit. But there is still a risk – albeit in a weakened form, as Professor Michael Albrecht told us Saxon.of explained.
Staff shortage instead of shortness of breath
Corona is not the same as Corona:
In 2020 and 2021, at the peak of the Delta Wave, we saw the dire phenomenon that this type triggered a general immune response […] If there is nothing on [derzeitigen] Virus type changes, I expect that we will not see patient flooding in the hospitals in the fall and winter.
So far so good. Life-threatening courses are not expected, but staff shortages, especially in the medical sector and other public services, are expected due to the higher risk of infection.
Plus the flu
In addition, the head of the university hospital predicts an increased wave of flu in January. The focus on combating corona has the flu protection receded into the background. According to Albrecht, this can mean a loss of staff of 20 percent – and thus a large gap in care.
So everyone is advised to continue to be careful: wear a mask, keep your distance, comply with hygiene rules. He advises very old people and those who have previously been ill to get a corona vaccination. However, the professor believes that protection against the flu makes sense for everyone in order to restore immunity.
