Even though it is banned from Apple Watches for sale in the United States, the measurement of blood oxygen level continues to help save lives around the world. Second an article published by BBCa doctor used the smartwatch to help an elderly woman in an emergency situation mid-flight.
During a holiday trip to Italy, British doctor Rashid Riaz volunteered to help the woman, who is around 70 years old and suddenly suffered from shortness of breath. Using a flight attendant’s Apple Watch, he used the watch’s native app to measure the patient’s oxygen levels.
It was thanks to the smartwatch that he discovered that the elderly woman suffered from low oxygen saturation in her blood — which made him immediately ask the team for an oxygen cylinder to carefully monitor the woman’s levels during the remainder of the trip.
It was like this until they landed safely in Italy, an hour following the incident. The patient managed to quickly recover from the crisis and was handed over to a medical team as soon as she left the plane.
For Riaz, what happened was a lesson in how airlines can improve travel — especially by making emergency medical kits and measurement tools available as standard.
