As an alternative to traditional glasses, contact lenses have become popular among Brazilians. According to the Brazilian Society of Contact Lenses, more than two million people in the country, regarding 1% of the population, wear lenses. They are diverse and versatile, and can be used for both aesthetic and eye health purposes.
However, lenses can be dangerous if some simple precautions are not applied. Recently, a young American lost his sight following taking a nap without removing his eye corrector. But if used correctly, the lenses are perfectly safe.

Check out the 6 most common mistakes when wearing contact lenses
“People with myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia do not need to give up their appearance for the sake of health with the use of contact lenses. Another advantage of the visual corrector is freedom of movement, which makes it ideal for practicing sports”, says ophthalmologist Emília Lucena, from the Núcleo de Ophthalmologia, in Brasília.
She highlights five tips for the correct use of lenses that, in addition to protecting once morest possible infections, extend their useful life:
- Always wash your hands very well with soap and water and dry them before handling the lenses;
- Under no circumstances sleep with lenses (except cases where there is a medical indication);
- Daily discard the liquid from the lens cases and replace it with a new one;
- Do not use tap water to clean the lens and give preference to products suitable for cleaning and conservation;
- Do not use them for longer than indicated by the ophthalmologist. Dispose of lenses in the correct time.
By following the instructions, Emília adds that the patient avoids cases of keratitis: without proper hygiene, microorganisms can come into contact with the lens and infect the eyes.
“For those who wear corrective contact lenses, the ideal is to see an ophthalmologist every six months. Visits to the offices can identify and treat issues such as redness, pain, visual clouding and secretion, signs that something is not right with your eye”, says the doctor.
