According to science, drinking a glass of wine every day can bring numerous health benefits – in addition to being healthy for the heart, the liquid is also interesting for keeping the intestinal microbiota healthy. However, for that, variety is needed: no choosing a pet wine, the ideal is always to look for different grapes.
Epidemiology professor Tim Spector, from King’s College London, in the United Kingdom, explains that, just as it happens with vegetables and fruits, which must be varied in the composition of the diet, the same happens with wine.
“Diversity is important — if you take the food analogy into account, having a variety of grapes in your diet means you are helping different microorganisms in the gut and promoting their diversity. So don’t always drink the same wine. Test hundreds and thousands of different grapes”, says the doctor.
In 2019, a study led by Spector showed that people who drank red wine had a higher amount of different bacteria in the gut, which was not observed in white wine or conventional grape juice. The difference with the red version is that the skin of the grape, which is left as part of the fermentation process, is rich in polyphenols, a compound capable of reducing inflammation in the body.
Spector recalls that wine consumption should be done in moderation, not exceeding two glasses a day, and that the ideal is to fit the drink in with lunch, or before dinner, so as not to disturb sleep. Despite the fact that wine makes you want to sleep, the quality of rest is affected by alcohol.
