Chavez risks up to ten years in prison.
The “Friends” star died as a result of acute effects from the ketamine and other factors that caused him to pass out and drown in the bathtub.
Chavez is one of two doctors charged in the overdose death. The other, Salvador Plasencia, has pleaded not guilty.
There are also three other defendants in the case. Two of them have pleaded guilty, including Perry’s former assistant Kenneth Iwamasa.
It was expected that Chavez would plead guilty, as it became clear as early as August that he had signed a plea deal with prosecutors.
Defense attorney Matt Binninger told the courtroom that Chavez is full of remorse and that he is doing everything in his power to resolve the case.
The three defendants who have already pleaded guilty are now cooperating with the prosecution to bring down the two who are believed to be most responsible for the death.
They are the aforementioned Plasencia and Jasveen Sangha, the latter, according to the prosecution, was the drug dealer and is to be known as the “ketamine queen”. Their trials are scheduled for March next year.
It’s been a little over a year since Perry was found dead.
