ROME (AP) — Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is in stable condition following three weeks in a hospital receiving treatment for a lung infection, his doctors said Wednesday.

Berlusconi, who was initially admitted to the intensive care unit at Milan’s San Raffaele clinic, has responded well to treatment and his lungs are recovering in an “optimal and convincing” manner, said doctors Alberto Zangrillo and Fabio Ciceri.

Berlusconi, 86, was admitted on April 5 with a lung infection. During his hospitalization, doctors publicly revealed for the first time that the three-time premier and media businessman suffers from chronic leukemia.

He went from intensive care to a regular ward on April 16.

In recent years, Berlusconi has suffered from severe heart problems and in 2020 he was admitted to the same hospital in critical condition with COVID-19.

Members of his Forza Italia party have expressed hope that he will be able to participate, in person or remotely, in a large party event on May 5-6 in Milan.

Forza Italia, created by Berlusconi in the 1990s, is a junior partner in the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
