Doctolib is the leader in medical appointments in France.

HEALTH – Doctolib adds a new string to his bow. The leader in medical appointments in France announced, in an email sent to its users, that the platform will offer around the start of the 2023 school year a new feature: secure messaging allowing patients to contact their doctor directly. This innovation aims to facilitate exchanges while maintaining the confidentiality of information.

Specifically, according to the conditions of use reported by BFM TV, users will be able to send requests by message to health actors of whom they are already patients. But Doctolib specified in its email that it is not an emergency service: “the user acknowledges that the “Patient Messaging” service is not intended to carry out consultations or medical visits, nor to obtain medical reports, nor to respond to emergency situations”.

Facilitate medical procedures

The purpose of this tool is to facilitate medical procedures, in particular the creation of prescriptions remotely. The medical appointments platform also specified that the arrival of this functionality follows the request of practitioners to secure patient contact. The latter are often carried out by email, personal telephone, secretariat, or SMS.

Doctolib explained to Tech&What que “Messaging will allow practitioners who wish to do so to renew prescriptions, for example for patients suffering from chronic illnesses, to avoid having them come to the practice just for that”. But practitioners won’t be forced to accept users’ message requests and will keep control of their messaging.

Doing some prevention

Doctors will also be able to contact patients by email to send them messages regarding prevention or organizing their practice. “The objective is to continuously improve prevention”Doctolib told Tech&Co.

The system has already been tested in Italy where 500,000 Italians have received electronic messages relating to the various campaigns in progress. The online medical appointment platform has mentioned a launch of the functionality next fall on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the French company.
