What impact does TikTok have on the brain?
The very popular TikTok application is now being singled out for its strong addictive power and its consequences on brain functioning. So much so that China might limit its use.
In a few years, social networks have made us like captured using their constant stream of short-form content , especially short videos. Mental health professionals and neuroscientists fear that this new form of addiction will lead, in the near future, to real cognitive deficits in young people accompanied by attention disordersof eating disorders of a lack of self-controlor even suicidal behavior .
According to a Chinese study1 of 2021, viewing in “bursts” of short videos like those found on TikTok (and of which the Chinese platform has made a specialty) leads to a overactivation of the immediate reward system , called “dopaminergic”, named following the pleasure hormone. The result would be a constant and frenzied search for this type of reward which, according to a brand new study2risks leading to a deficit in the ability to concentrate for longer activitieslike reading or studying in general.

To avoid these consequences, it would be appropriate to limit the time spent on these applications for the benefit of activities that are more enriching for the brain, such as reading, music, sport… A message that has been seized by the Chinese power: its “national cyberspace regulatory authority” has pushedsmartphone manufacturers to integrate a “minor mode” into their devices and issued a proposal in August3 in order to limit the time of internet use by those under 18 years of age.
