The devil is in the details! Sometimes even in a cup of coffee or a simple glass of water… So, during a next job interview, apart from the classic questions asked, it would be good to know certain tips which are popular among certain recruiters. Far from being trivial, these methods test the personality of a potential future collaborator and put them to the test. The result can be crippling. This is what the former director of a large Australian company revealed in an interview.

At a time when soft skills are increasingly valued in recruitment processes, some companies are resorting to rather surprising tactics. And it is good practice to know them, in order to put all the chances on your side! This is for example the case of the “coffee cup test”.

If you’re having a job interview and the person who greets you offers you a coffee, be careful… Because, rather than putting you at ease, this offer might on the contrary put you to the test. Yes, it might be that the recruiter is inspired by coffee cup test or, in French, the “coffee cup test”. This method was invented by Australian Trent Innes, former business manager at Xero Australia. The principle ? Observe the candidate’s reaction once the interview is over. If the person shows their desire to get rid of their cup, they will score points. If she leaves it lying around on the desk, however… that might well be unacceptable in the eyes of the recruiter.

Test a candidate’s initiative

Although it may seem trivial at first glance, this method would have helped the Australian boss on several occasions to make his choice to retain (or reject) the applications that came to him. And the reason is not difficult to understand: from Trent Innes’ point of view, bringing home his cup demonstrates initiative and team spirit as well as a strong ability to adapt quickly to the company culture. “ You can develop skills, you can gain knowledge and experience, but it’s really regarding attitude », Points out the latter in an interview given to the newspaper The Mirror.

Recruitment software automatically rejects millions of qualified candidates

A lesson to remember if you are offered a coffee or a glass of water during your next job interview. Because, while it will seem natural for some to ask where they can wash their cup (or throw away their paper cup), others will hesitate to do it, or even pay no attention to it. But this might backfire if the person conducting the interview decided to put the coffee cup test in practice…

The coffee cup trick is not unique: other tests focused on the socio-emotional qualities of candidates are getting talked regarding. For example, the “ receptionist test » in which the person responsible for recruitment will take on the role of a receptionist in order to interact with the candidate before the official interview. If the latter appears rude and contemptuous, he will then get off to a very bad start which might even prove fatal!
