Baek Jong-won, a culinary researcher and businessman, came forward to explain himself when he was criticized for ignoring Thai food on a recent YouTube broadcast.

On the 15th, Baek Jong-won left a notice comment on a video on his YouTube channel that became controversial, saying, “I love Thai food and am a fan of Thai gourmet food,” and “I also respect the eating method of Thai people who enjoy (Thai food) Mukata.” He said.

Mukatha is a Thai-style bulgogi hot pot dish. On the 12th, Baek Jong-won uploaded a video of himself eating Mukatha in Bangkok, Thailand, on his YouTube channel.

In the video, Baek Jong-won said regarding the grill for grilling muqata, “There is a theory that it originated when Korean soldiers who participated in the Vietnam War brought a bulgogi plate.”

The production team also said, “There is a story that a Thai person saw the Korean bulgogi version and said, ‘I should make it the same way.’ “I think it’s true that it originated in Korea,” he said.

Baek Jong-won also said at the restaurant, “I think I’m the best at grilling (mukata) out of all the customers I’ve had so far,” and added, “I have a firm determination to never burn the grill. “Koreans must show that they are a people of bulgogi,” he said.

At this point, a subtitle appeared with the nuance that Thai locals were looking at Baek Jong-won’s table in surprise at his cooking skills.

Thai people who watched this video commented, “Why do you say that the mukattha grill originated in Korea?” “Baek Jong-won didn’t eat mukattha the Thai way” and “The reason the locals were looking at you was because you were acting strangely.” He protested by leaving comments such as:

Baek Jong-won said, “I only reviewed it in the hope that more tourists would come to Thailand and enjoy Mukatha together, and there was no intention whatsoever. I hope there is no misunderstanding regarding what I tried to express in a fun way in the video.”
