Do you have diabetes? See 5 sweets you are allowed to eat

The diet of people with diabetes needs to be very well planned. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by problems with the action or production of the hormone insulin, which causes the body to have problems transporting glucose to cells.

To regulate blood sugar and keep diabetes under control, people with the syndrome often avoid desserts. However, this rule is not so strict and some sweet foods are allowed for consumption, as long as they are used sparingly.

“People with diabetes can eat anything, as long as it is in the right amount and at the right time. The diet only needs to be healthy, as everyone’s diet should be”, says nutritionist Cynara Oliveira, from Hospital Santa Lúcia, in Brasília.

The nutritionist explains that fruits are the best options to satisfy the craving for sweets, because they add fiber to the diet. See other foods recommended by experts that also fulfill this function?

1. Dark chocolate

It is composed of at least 70% cocoa, which is a source of tryptophan, an amino acid precursor of neurotransmitters responsible for regulating appetite.

“Dark chocolate is a great option to kill the desire to eat sweets. The patient, however, must always be aware of the list of ingredients so as not to be deceived. Cocoa needs to be the first ingredient on the list”, warns nutritionist Thayanne Neiva, from the Tivoli clinic, in Brasília.

However, the consumption of dark chocolate should not be deregulated. The person with diabetes should consult a nutrition professional so that the limit amount is established within the menu.

2. Fruit with fiber

Fruits with a low glycemic index, such as papaya, strawberries, avocado and pineapple, are best for people with diabetes.

Those with a high glycemic index, such as bananas, can be consumed as long as they are accompanied by fiber or protein. “I recommend eating this type of fruit with a source of fiber, such as oats and chia, or protein, such as cheese, yogurt and nuts. Thus, the absorption of sugar becomes slower”, highlights Cynara Oliveira.

3. Homemade ice cream

Ice cream is a dessert usually high in fat and sugar. By making it at home, you can achieve a healthier version with fruit, plain frozen yogurt, and sugar substitutes.

4. Sugar-free fruit popsicle

Just like ice cream, an unsweetened fruit popsicle can be a dessert option. Nutritionists recommend that people with diabetes choose fruits with a lower glycemic index, such as strawberries, cherries and kiwis. A good tip is to use the peels in the preparation.

5. Pera

A medium-sized pear has 17 grams of sugar. It is a very sweet fruit, however, it has a low load and glycemic index. Soon it’s a great dessert option for people with diabetes.
