Do you have an old newspaper…? Don’t waste it, money will come

Kochi: Think twice before throwing away old newspapers. There is now a huge demand for newspapers, which were sold for Rs 5 to 10 in the past. Available at Rs 30 to Rs 33 per kg.

The price of old newspapers has skyrocketed amid a global shortage in the paper industry. International issues such as the state’s plastic ban and the Russia-Ukraine conflict and civil strife in Sri Lanka have boosted the demand for newspapers.

Meanwhile, the export of paper from the country has reached an all-time record of Rs 13,963 crore, according to the figures of the Director General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics. About 45 percent of India’s newsprint imports come from Russia.

With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, other countries have widely canceled agreements with the country. The boycott of Russian products by shipping companies and ports due to the occupation and embargo has led to shortages of paper in the domestic market.

Sri Lanka’s civil strife has affected freight traffic. The closure of the ports led to the stalling of containers carrying newsprint. Meanwhile, there is a huge increase in China’s paper and pulp imports. India’s paper exports have also gone up with demand for carton boxes in the e-commerce sector.

About 90 percent of India’s paper exports go to China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and UAE. The demand for paper, kraft papers and carton boxes is increasing worldwide.

The Indian Paper Manufacturers Association predicts that the price of old newspapers will continue to rise due to these reasons. China has a large number of contracts for carton boxes from companies in various countries.
