With temperatures dropping and respiratory viruses in the air, coughing is starting to appear more intense. While it’s not necessarily a cause for concern, a chest that hurts when you cough might indicate a more serious problem, pleurisy.
According to Andrea Bell, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at London Bridge Hospital: “Pleuritis describes a condition where two large, thin layers of tissue separating your lungs from your chest wall become inflamed. These layers are also referred to as the pleura.
And he adds: “The most common symptom of this condition is sharp chest pain that gets worse when breathing, however, you may also feel chest pain when coughing, sneezing or moving,” according to the British newspaper express.
He continued: “You will hardly notice the pleura when you are healthy. When you breathe, this fluid allows the pleura to slide smoothly once morest each other. In a person with pleurisy, the pleura becomes inflamed and rubs together every time your lungs expand, causing chest pain.” “.
He warned: “When you inhale deeply, cough, sneeze or laugh, you are likely to feel a sharp, stabbing pain in the affected area. This type of pain may be present in one place or it may also spread to your shoulders and back.”
Other symptoms of pleurisy
Because chest pain when coughing is “relatively common,” other symptoms can also help identify pleurisy, including:
Shortness of breath
Cough
fever and chills
Rapid breathing
Unexplained weight loss
A sore throat is followed by pain and swelling in your joints.
Even worse, some patients with pleurisy may experience a buildup of fluid called a pleural effusion.
The symptom of “water on the lungs” describes the excess fluid present between the layers of the pleura on the outside of the lungs.
Bell advises: “See your doctor if you experience the above symptoms. Seek medical help immediately if your chest pain is severe, especially if you also have other symptoms, such as coughing up blood, nausea, or sweating.”
Other causes of pain when coughing
While pain when coughing is one of the main symptoms of pleurisy, there are other reasons that can lead to this annoying symptom.
The expert shared that as long as this sign is not “persistent or severe,” the pain may go away on its own.
“However, chest pain can sometimes indicate a serious chest infection, such as pneumonia or less serious acute bronchitis.”
Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation of the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, causing a cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing.
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the tubes that carry air to and from your lungs. Irritation of the bronchial tubes can cause repeated bouts of coughing, which can lead to chest pain.
If you are concerned regarding any persistent or unusual symptoms, you should see a doctor immediately.
