Do pears raise blood sugar?

In this regard, Dr. Ahmed Anwar, a consultant internal medicine specialist, said that pears are useful and safe fruits for diabetics, stressing that they do not raise blood sugar following eating them, as some believe.

Anwar added that the reason why blood sugar does not rise following eating pears is because they contain a high percentage of dietary fiber, which helps slow down the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine.

He explained that pears are also characterized by their low glycemic index, ranging between 20 and 49 degrees, which means that they do not negatively affect blood sugar levels.

The internal medicine consultant pointed out that there is another reason that pears do not raise blood glucose in patients with diabetes, which is “they contain a small percentage of sugars.”

However, he recommended that diabetics eat pears in moderation, continuing: “The amount consumed per day should not exceed two fruits only, the first for breakfast and the other for dinner.”

Anwar advised diabetics to eat pears in their solid form, because juicing increases the concentration of sugars available in them, as well as losing a large amount of their dietary fiber, which is of great importance to the health of the digestive system and helps in losing weight.

In conclusion, he also stressed the need not to peel pears before eating them, because a large part of their dietary fiber is concentrated in the outer shell.
