Marcella Wieland took part in a special role at the Salzburg Advent Singing 2023.
Marcella Wieland embodies Anna in this year’s work “Don’t be afraid!”. Her passion for theater was sparked in 2012 by the “Theater Mokrit” of the Lungau Cultural Association. Since then, Marcella Wieland has appeared in many productions such as Tannöd, Everyman, 8 Women, Pawel – Protocols of Oblivion and others.
She has been on stage with the ensemble for puppet and children’s theater since 2018 and goes on tour throughout Austria with changing productions. “I was very surprised when I found out that I had the opportunity to embody ‘Anna’. Playing in front of such a large audience, and in the Great Festival Hall, is great, unique and special for me. It was a new, special challenge for me.”
About the role of “Anna”: The widow Anna, who has only been dressed in dark clothes since the death of her husband Joachim, lives with her daughter in a modest property with a small farm on the outskirts of Nazareth. The most important treasure in the house is a chest containing Torah scrolls that have been passed down for many generations and proof of descent from the House of David. Anna and Joachim had to wait a long time to become pregnant. Only when Joachim did penance (quarantine) in the desert for 40 days was her longing heard and Mary’s birth announced by an angel. Maria and her mother Anna, who is already a widow, play a special role in this Salzburg Advent singing. Show how familiar they are with each other in their mother-child relationship. Trumpeter Horst Hofer was also on stage.
