England – Many resort to wearing prescription glasses to correct vision problems in the eye, such as hyperopia, myopia (short-sightedness), astigmatism, and others.
Some may notice that even though everything seems completely clear, following a few weeks of wearing glasses, things appear blurrier without them than the vision was before the eye test.
Some may incorrectly interpret this as glasses making their vision worse. The fear of this happening may make them less likely to wear their glasses.
But what they notice is how much better the world looks through glasses. They become less tolerant of the foggy world when they remove the glasses.
Here are some things you may notice regarding your eyesight and wearing glasses.
Lazy eyes
Some people feel an increased dependence on glasses and wonder if their eyes are becoming “lazy.”
Experts explain that our eyes work in the same way as an auto-focus camera. A flexible lens inside each eye is controlled by muscles that allow us to focus on distant objects by relaxing the muscles to flatten the lens.
When the muscle contracts, it makes the lens steeper and more powerful for seeing objects closer to us (such as a text message).
Starting around the age of forty, the eye’s lens gradually hardens and loses its ability to change its shape. Gradually, we lose our ability to focus on close objects. This is called “presbyopia,” and currently there is no treatment for lens sclerosis.
Doctors correct this by using eyeglasses, as the lenses allow those close-up images to be seen clearly by providing additional refractive power.
Once we get used to seeing clearly, our ability to tolerate blurry vision will be less and we will resort to glasses to see well once more.
Wrong glasses
Wearing old glasses or the wrong prescription (or even someone else’s glasses) will not allow you to see well. It can also cause eye strain and headaches.
Improperly prescribed or fitted eyeglasses can lead to poor vision in children because their visual system is still developing.
But it is more common for children to develop long-term vision problems as a result of not wearing glasses when they need them.
By the time children are around 10-12 years old, wearing incorrect glasses is unlikely to make their eyes lazy or damage their vision in the long term, but is likely to result in blurry or uncomfortable vision during daily wear.
Dirty glasses
Dirty or scratched glasses can give you the impression that your vision is worse than it actually is.
Just like a window, the dirtier your glasses are, the more difficult it is to see clearly through them. Cleaning glasses regularly with a microfiber cloth will help.
While dirty glasses are not usually associated with eye infections, some research suggests that dirty glasses can harbor bacteria with the potential to cause eye infections.
To ensure the best possible vision, those who wear prescription glasses should clean their lenses at least every morning, and twice daily when needed.
Cleaning frames with alcohol wipes can reduce bacterial contamination by 96%, but caution must be taken because alcohol can damage some eyeglass frames, depending on the material they are made of.
When should I have my eyes examined?
Regular eye exams, starting just before school age, are important for eye health. Most corrective eyeglass prescriptions expire within two years, and contact lens prescriptions often expire following a year. So you will need an eye examination every year or so.
Children with visual diseases such as progressive myopia, strabismus (poor eye alignment), or decreased vision in one eye will need screenings at least every year. Likewise, people over the age of 65 or with eye diseases, such as glaucoma, will be advised to have frequent screenings.
Conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure can affect the eyes, so regular eye exams can help identify underlying health problems. The vast majority of eye conditions can be treated if detected early, highlighting the importance of regular preventive care.
