DNA aims to clarify the identity of a suspected mafia victim

The identity of the dead man who was found last Wednesday in an apartment on Sautergasse in Vienna-Ottakring is still unclear. Perhaps only a DNA report will provide clarity in this regard. How the man was brought to death and the final cause of death have not yet been determined. “An autopsy was ordered to clarify these questions,” said Nina Bussek, spokeswoman for the Vienna public prosecutor’s office, on Saturday in response to an APA request.

The circumstances of the crime and the fact that the victim was severely abused suggest that it might be a mafia murder. The man’s fingers were cut off to make identification via fingerprints impossible. The law enforcement authorities are now hoping that a DNA report can be used to determine who the dead man is. The police had recently confirmed media reports to the APA in which there was talk of further limbs being severed. The deceased had numerous stab wounds in his upper body.

There was apparently a marijuana plantation in the apartment where the body was discovered. Appropriate equipment was secured. The man killed may have been responsible for growing the cannabis plants and was involved in a drug gang. There was currently no confirmation of this at the weekend; both the public prosecutor’s office and the Vienna State Police Directorate are keeping a very low profile in the case. What is certain is that the surveys are conducted as a classified file and the crime is attributed to organized crime (OC).

Public prosecutor spokeswoman Bussek did not comment on the fact that the first traces lead to Serbia or to mafia groups in the Balkans – as the “Kronen Zeitung” suggested in its Saturday edition. In response to an APA inquiry, the Federal Criminal Police Office said it was supporting colleagues from the Vienna State Police Directorate in the investigation. An investigative group specializing in OC and addictive substances is helping the Viennese colleagues.

The methodology of the case is reminiscent of the procedures of a criminal organization surrounding the alleged Montenegrin mafia godfather Dario D. alias “Dexter”, who was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Vienna Regional Court in December 2023 and is said to have resorted to particularly brutal methods when he committed himself felt betrayed by members of his group. The dismantled criminal organization that “Dexter” is said to have headed was a branch of a Montenegrin mafia clan that carried out illegal business across Europe from the port city of Kotor – not only with drugs, but also with weapons. A member of the so-called Kavac clan was shot in front of a celebrity bar in Vienna’s Wollzeile in December 2018 – it is said to have been a murder commissioned by the rival Skaljari clan. “Dexter’s” sentence to life imprisonment for the organized sale of several hundred kilograms of heroin and cocaine in Vienna is not final, but he had filed an appeal once morest it.
