Left Electoral Alliance

The DK forms an electoral alliance with the MSZP and Párbeszéd for the European elections and for the local elections in Budapest.

MEP Klára Dobrev spoke at a joint press conference before Easter about a long-term, strategic agreement between her party and the Socialists and Párbeszéd. The wife of former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány reiterated the theory that the government was losing control and could no longer lead the country. At the same time, she complained about the increasing fragmentation of the opposition forces – the three-party alliance wanted to counteract exactly this trend. Dobrev announced that this alliance would also apply to everyday life after the June 9 election date, for example when determining the next leading candidate for the office of prime minister.

Serve, not rule

Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, as a member of the executive board of the left-wing splinter party Párbeszéd, emphasized that politics must be about serving and not ruling. The joint list of the three parties lays the foundation for dignified and correct cooperation “as a leading force in Budapest politics”.

The only correct answer

The co-chair of the MSZP, Ágnes Kunhalmi, sees the merger as the only correct answer to the will of the opposition voters. “80% of voters understood that the authoritarian Orbán system, which is increasingly open to right-wing radicals, can only be pushed back in 2024 and defeated in 2026 through a stable, broad-based coalition,” explained the socialist MP.

“It’s growing together…”

“What belongs together is growing together,” said the former government spokeswoman and current Fidesz top candidate for mayor of Budapest, Alexandra Szentkirályi, commenting on the news of the strategic left-wing alliance.
