The organizers of the Madrid Open Tennis Championship announced today, Saturday, the withdrawal of Serbian Novak Djokovic from the tournament, which begins next week, to join the world number one, Rafael Nadal, who is also absent from the tournament.
Djokovic, who was unable to compete in the US hardcourt tournaments earlier this year because he had not been vaccinated once morest COVID-19, was preparing for the clay court season but was knocked out early at the Monte Carlo Masters and then the Srpska Open.
Djokovic, 35, said following losing to compatriot Dusan Lajovic in the quarter-finals of the Srpska Open in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
But the Serb said he still hoped to reach his best clay court performance before next month’s French Open.
“We wish you a speedy recovery, we hope to see you on the courts as soon as possible, Noli,” the organizers said in a statement, without disclosing details regarding Djokovic’s condition.
Nadal announced earlier this week that he would miss the tournament following suffering a setback while recovering from a groin injury sustained at the Australian Open in January.
The two players share the record for the number of times winning the four major tournaments with 22 titles each.
The French Open, the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments, begins on May 28.
