Novak Djokovic Plans Strategic Adjustments for 2025 Season
After claiming the Paris Olympics gold medal as his only tournament win in 2024, tennis icon Novak Djokovic is setting his sights on the game’s next generation. With the guidance of his new coach, former rival Andy Murray, Djokovic aims to refine his game and mount a serious challenge against rising stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic, ranked seventh in the world, kicked off his quest for a 100th ATP title with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory over Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata in the first round of the Brisbane International. A win in Brisbane would serve as ideal planning for Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, a tournament where he has already secured ten victories.
The 37-year-old Djokovic emphasized that while he’s not looking for a complete game overhaul, he intends to make subtle but impactful adjustments to his strategy.
“I’m not looking to transform my game fully… I’m not going to be Giovanni (rising star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard) serving two first serves and coming in to the net,” Djokovic told Australian Associated Press.
“But I definitely am looking to improve,even if it’s the slightest percentage,every single shot that I have in my game,and maybe something that people don’t necessarily see is this court positioning,the transition play,the tactics.”
Djokovic highlighted his commitment to putting in the necesary work on the court. “Physically, mentally, as well, I’m ready to compete, whatever it takes, however many hours it takes with the youngsters,” he stated. “The week before the Australian Open, we will do a lot of video analysis of my main opponents, top guys, trying to understand how my game matches up.”
with Murray currently enjoying a family skiing trip, Djokovic expressed his well wishes while playfully hoping for his coach’s safety on the slopes.
Murray, known for his dry humor, couldn’t resist responding with a video on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “I’m taking on some huge slopes as you can see but no injuries just yet.” The “huge slopes,” though,appeared more akin to a beginner’s run.
