Five days following his triumph at the US Open, superstar Novak Djokovic has successfully returned to the tennis court. The Grand Slam record tournament winner secured Serbia’s 2-0 lead once morest Spain in the Davis Cup on Friday and thus secured promotion to the quarter-final tournament, which will be held in Malaga in November. Spain was missing young star Carlos Alcaraz, who gave his body a break.
Following Laslo Djere’s 6-4,6-4 win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Djokovic braved the hot and humid conditions in Valencia to beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3,6-4, making the doubles insignificant. In the second set, the 36-year-old made up for a 1:4 deficit.
“I’m on cloud nine, as you can imagine following everything that has happened on the tennis court recently,” said Djokovic, who is aiming for the second Davis Cup title with Serbia following 2010. “At the beginning of the season I said that the Grand Slams and appearances for my country were my priorities. The goal has been achieved, we are in the last eight. Hopefully we can continue to go in the right direction,” said the world number one.
In Group C, alongside Serbia, the Czech Republic is also confirmed to be promoted.
