He later signed with Big Oomp Records in 2000, and his debut album, beat’n Down Yo Block, was released on Koch Records in 2006. Life, though, threw a curveball in 2009 when Unk experienced a heart attack. Reflecting on the incident, he attributed its occurrence to “not exercising, from not eating right, ” sharing his perspective with XXL magazine in 2010.
“Basically, man, I work hard every day. Everything I do every day I try to make something happen in my household. I constantly be on the go. I constantly be on airplanes, in diffrent weather, and, you know, it just took a toll on me. it was stress.”
Undeterred, DJ Unk continued to churn out music, releasing singles such as “Get em Up,” “Trap It Out,” and “have a Toast” in the early 2010s. His third album, Fresh Off Dem Papers, arrived in 2017, marking yet another chapter in his musical journey.

DJ Yung B: It feels surreal,you know? I met anthony,DJ Unk,back in the early 2000s. We were both DJing on the mixtape circuit back in Atlanta. Back then, we called ourselves the Southern Style DJs, him, me, and DJ Montay. We were young, passionate about music, and just wanted to make our mark. Anthony always had a contagious energy. He was the life of the party, always ready with a smile and a quick joke.
Revolutionizing the Sound
Archyde: DJ Unk is undeniably best known for his hit ”Walk It Out.” What was it like to witness the explosion of that song, and how did it change the landscape of hip-hop?
DJ Yung B: Walking out, man, that was something special. We knew it was a banger from the first time we heard it in the studio, but the way it took off – it was crazy. It became the anthem of the South, a party staple everywhere.It reached folks across genres, got everyone out of thier seats and dancing.DJ Unk had this ability to bring his own flavor, that Southern bounce, to the mainstream and it resonated. When everyone started “walking,” you knew something big was happening.

DJ Yung B: That’s a good question. Anthony always talked about inspiring the next generation, making music that brought people together.I think that’s what he’ll be remembered for. He wasn’t just about the hits; he lived for the music, for the connection with the crowd.That energy, that passion, will stay with people.
