The Ghent cultural center Vooruit has confirmed that its event around “Queen Nikkolah”, also scheduled for December 6, is being maintained. “I think the city’s decision is a bit hasty,” Vooruit general coordinator Franky Devos told the Belga agency. “This is an incredible children’s party that shows the diversity of the world. And this party can coexist perfectly with the other. Children can also come to both parties,” he added.

“Queen Nikkolah” is a character who challenges conventional boundaries between cultures and genres. The objective of this alternative to the traditional great Saint is to approach the tradition in a different way, without the stereotypes of yesteryear. The city of Ghent had explained that the intention was not to cancel the traditional Saint Nicholas celebration in the future. The latter thus already appeared in Ghent on November 19, surrounded by a large number of his companions, in front of nearly 600 children.
