“Dive” 4,000 feet in 2 minutes

The twin-engine ATR-72 was flying from Cascavel, Paraná state, to Guarulos Airport in Sao Paulo. According to a statement from the Voepass company, 58 travelers and 4 crew members were on board the aircraft.

Videos broadcast by television networks show the uncontrollable spin of the fatal aircraft and its crash into the ground.

Speaking at an event, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked those present to observe a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the plane tragedy.

The plane was traveling at 17,000 feet but plunged 4,000 feet within two minutes and then lost its GPS signal, the Guardian reports, citing the Flight Radar website.

Videos on social media captured the moment of the fall and the cloud of black smoke that rose from the scene. Other videos show debris burning and authorities arriving at the scene.

On the UOL website, Ana Lucia de Lima, a resident of a nearby housing complex, said the noise was so loud that “it sounded like it was falling inside my house… The first explosion was strong, black smoke was already coming out, and then there were several more explosions.”

Brazil’s GloboNews television showed footage of a large area on fire and smoke billowing from the fuselage of a plane that appeared to be on fire. Additional footage on GloboNews showed a plane drifting vertically downward and spinning as it fell.

The fire service of the state of Sao Paulo confirmed on social media that a plane had crashed in Vinedo and that it had sent seven rescue crews to the crash site.
