In broad daylight, a 12-year-old boy walks into a gas station and points a gun at the cashier. He demands money. The cashier can hardly believe it and asks: “Are you sure?”. In response, the child fires a warning shot into the ceiling of the gas station. The cashier hands him several thousand US dollars, then the boy walks away. Surveillance cameras film the robbery, our video shows the footage.

Boy arrested, money and gun seized

The boy is not taken far. He was arrested just two blocks from the scene of the crime. Both the loot and the weapon were seized. His motive is not clear: Police officer Michael Prince explains, “He doesn’t tell us the exact reason. He says it wasn’t about the money.”

Prince wonders: “It amazes me that a young person would go into a shop with customers in broad daylight without a mask, announce an armed robbery, and then fire a shot into the ceiling when confronted with the cashier.”

The boy had taken the gun from the gun closet in his home. The cupboard was apparently locked, but the boy managed to open it anyway.

Juvenile court deliberates on Thursday

The robbery happened on Monday afternoon in Hartford, a small town in the US state of Michigan. The boy is expected to have to explain himself before a juvenile court on Thursday. (cli)
