At least two other seniors have died in disturbing circumstances in recent years in Boisé Sainte-Thérèse, where a woman died of suffocation a few months ago.

In both cases, the family considers that the level of supervision and care offered to their loved one was not sufficient given their condition.

These disturbing stories are reminiscent of one told by our Bureau of Investigation on Monday, in which a 92-year-old lady died horribly following first falling down the stairs and then, 10 days later, choking on food.

Our Bureau of Investigation revealed on Monday that Mireille Éthier had come to an atrocious end in November 2022, choking to death while eating at the CHSLD du Boisé Sainte-Thérèse. Photo provided by Benoît Carpentier

“We trust because we are promised that everything will be fine, but finally, a fall happens. It’s terrible,” says Nathalie Dubé, whose mother, Marielle Dubé-Lévesque, died of a hip fracture in December 2011.

Ms. Dubé says her family had no choice but to “place” the eldest at Le Boisé, the only residence available given her budget. But as soon as Ms. Dubé-Lévesque arrived, the family was convinced that the surveillance would not be sufficient.

Fall the next day

Barely 24 hours following arriving, the 70-year-old fell and broke her hip. She died regarding three weeks later.

Similar story for Stéphane Fortin, who lost his mother in “difficult” circumstances in February 2013.

Jeannette Fortin-Gaboury fell on the stairs of Boisé Sainte-Thérèse which she had just climbed. She died of head trauma, caused by the impact on the ground.

“I think the place was not adequate. It was not safe for someone in his condition, ”says his son Stéphane Fortin, whose mother suffered in particular from Parkinson’s.

Guardianship questioned

In the National Assembly, the Liberal Party and the Parti Québécois deplored the situation recounted Monday by our Bureau of Inquiry.

“What is the use of a CHSLD being under the supervision of the government if such a tragedy can happen anyway? When will the government take responsibility? criticized Liberal MP Linda Caron, adding that the CISSS des Laurentides is “accountable”.

For his part, the PQ MP Joël Arseneau also judges that this death “raises questions regarding the rigor of the interventions resulting from the guardianship”.

According to the minister responsible for seniors, Sonia Bélanger, the death of Ms. Éthier is a “discouraging situation”. “We take the events very seriously, and regular follow-ups are made with the CISSS des Laurentides concerning the CHSLD Le Boisé”, expressed his cabinet, in a written declaration to the QMI Agency.
