Distant caste sounds: Shabbat Hebrew salutes Nathan Yonatan

Nathan Jonathanone of the greatest Israeli writers, poets and novelists in the history of the country, passed away regarding 20 years ago at the age of 64. Among his most notable poems: ‘Ha-Ish Heu’, ‘An Old Love Song’, ‘Nasef Tishrei’, ‘The Sand Will Remember’ and many more.

He began his singing career in 1940 at the age of 16, when he published his first poem – ‘When the ships are sailing’. The piece dealt with the issue of immigration and specifically the immigration ship ‘Atlantic’. 11 years later, he released his first book of poems – ‘Dirt Paths’.

During his career, Yonatan published countless books and song files that were translated into many languages ​​such as: English, Yiddish, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and more. He also won many awards: the Prime Minister’s Award for Hebrew Writers, the Golden Feather of Akum for Lifetime Achievement, the Bar Ilan University Award, the Bialik Award, the Alterman Award, and more.

Over the years, the poet’s songs have been performed by leading Israeli artists, including Chava Alberstein, Yizhar Cohen, Shlomo Artzi who composed and performed the well-known song ‘Ha’ish Ha Hoa’ and Zvika Pick who also composed and sang the piece ‘Nasaf Tishrei’.

On the 20th anniversary of Natan Yonatan’s death, Yoav Hanani, editor of ‘Shabbat Hebrew’, collected his best songs over the years that entered the impressive repertoire of Israeli music. Willow listening.
