Ahmedabad: The hands of a 67-year-old brain-dead man in Surat have been successfully implanted in a 35-year-old woman in Mumbai. The 292 km journey took 75 minutes from Surat to Mumbai.
Surat native Kanu Vashrambhai Patel has been admitted to a private hospital in the city following a heart attack on the 18th. In addition to the bleeding in the brain, a CT scan revealed a severe blood clot. He then had surgery to remove the blood clot.
However, on the 20th, doctors informed the family that Patel had suffered brain death. According to Donate Life volunteers and doctors, Patel’s family members agreed to donate his organs. Relatives agreed to donate both hands, kidneys, liver and eyes.
The decision was made to donate hands to a 35 – year – old woman from Buldhana in Maharashtra. However, getting to Mumbai as soon as possible was a challenge as the hands would stop working in six to eight hours. The green corridor was being prepared for this. The hands were carried by air from Surat to Mumbai.
The woman, who was undergoing treatment at the Global Hospital in Mumbai, had her hands successfully implanted. The girl lost both her hands due to electric shock while drying her laundry. This is the second time that hands have been donated from Surat. He has performed 20 hand transplants in India so far.
