Increase in flights between Liège and Tel Aviv

The air flow between Belgium and Israel is thus far from being stopped. “We are even seeing an increase in cargo flights from Liège to Tel Aviv,” explains Christian Delcourt, spokesperson for Liège airport. In particular, it is necessary to cover all the freight that passenger planes usually take with them.” But among this cargo, there would be military equipment, according to the common union front CNE, UBT, Setca and Transcom. “While a genocide is underway in Palestine, workers at different airports in Belgium are seeing weapons being sent to war zones,” explains the various unions in a press release. The loading and unloading of these weapons helps provide organizations to kill innocent people. We, the various unions active in the ground handling sector, ask our members to no longer support flights transporting military equipment to Palestine/Israel, as was the case at the start of the conflict with Russia and Ukraine, with agreements and clear rules”.

The common front calls for an “immediate ceasefire” and asks Belgian governments “to be consistent and not tolerate arms shipments passing through Belgian airports”. “As unions, we declare our solidarity with those campaigning for peace,” the statement concludes. How many weapons pass through Liège to the region currently in conflict? “As an airport operator, we do not have visibility on the equipment leaving on the planes,” insists Mr. Delcourt. If there are weapons, they are regulated by very strict export licenses”.
