Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) were disqualified from the US Grand Prix and therefore lost their positions 2 and 6!
The FIA commissioners Dennis Dean (USA), Derek Warwick (Great Britain), Andrew Mallalieu (Barbados) and Felix Holter (Germany) had no other choice – the Mercedes of seven-time world champion Hamilton and five-time GP winner Leclerc is undergoing routine testing failed following a Grand Prix.
The Englishman’s Mercedes W14 and the Monegasque’s Ferrari SF-23 had the same reason for disqualification: the floor plate on the cars did not comply with the technical regulations in accordance with Article 3.5.9.
The rules describe on two pages and in 23 sections what such a floor plate must be like. Crucial point at the Circuit of the Americas near Austin (Texas): The plate must be ten millimeters thick across the entire surface (with a tolerance of 0.2 millimeters) when it is new; one millimeter is considered acceptable sanding following use.
However, the plates on the Mercedes and Ferrari were more worn, a result of the undulating track and the additional use of the car following the GP qualifying in sprint qualifying and in the sprint, then in the race.
Since a Formula 1 racing car in sprint format is placed under so-called parc fermé conditions following free training, i.e. no parts can be changed, Mercedes and Ferrari were unable to do anything to combat the excessive wear of the plate. Unless they swapped him – which would have required a start from the pit lane.
According to the FIA, Mercedes and Ferrari have accepted the verdict and there will be no objections to it.
The mess means that Lando Norris moves up to second with McLaren and Carlos Sainz is now third in the Ferrari. Behind him Pérez is now in fourth place, Russell fifth, Gasly sixth, Stroll seventh, Tsunoda eighth, Albon ninth for Williams, and Logan Sargeant gets his first championship point by excluding Hamilton and Leclerc!
