Dispute over the Lobau tunnel between the ÖVP and the Greens will continue in 2024 – parties

The debate regarding the controversial Vienna S1 northeast bypass including the Lobau tunnel is currently flaring up once more and is leading to massive upheavals in the federal government between turquoise and green. The initial situation has not changed: Green Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler had already declared the end of the billion-euro project two years ago – and, in view of advancing climate change, justified this primarily with nature conservation. “I don’t want to think that we have blocked the children’s future,” she said on December 1, 2021. The ÖVP, on the other hand, is calling for the implementation of the delicate tunnel construction project through the nature reserve then as now. Finance Minister Magnus Brunner recently called for an end to the blockade of the Lobau Tunnel in a letter to Gewessler’s ministry.
