There have been rumors for a long time that Apple is working on an OLED iPad. These rumors are now being confirmed by a new report from The Elec fueled. The display supplier BOE is said to be preparing for the production of a corresponding iPad, but no OLED display for the iPad will roll off the assembly line in the supplier’s plant before 2024.

New OLED panels for the iPad

In preparation for Apple’s supply needs, BOE will set up a production line for 8.6-generation OLED displays at its B16 plant in China’s Sichuan province, according to The Elec. The new production line will reportedly be operational towards the end of 2024. The company plans to compete with Samsung Display as well as LG Display and supply Apple with OLED panels for future iPad and MacBook models.

Both Samsung and LG are said to be using Generation 6 production lines for their first OLED panels for iPads. Production will later be expanded to generation 8.5 for various Apple devices. Generation 8.5 production lines deliver more OLED panels per carrier than Generation 6 and are therefore more cost-effective.

BOE is also testing two-stack tandem OLED technology, which can offer higher brightness and longevity. Also Samsung is said to be actively working on the development of its own two-stack panels, which the company calls the T-Series (T for tandem). By using two superimposed levels of self-illuminating diodes, Samsung wants to achieve a luminosity of initially up to 1700 candelas. The longer service life should be made possible by the alternating use of the two levels. Initially, the new OLED technology will allegedly be used in Samsung’s own products from next year, and Apple will follow from 2024, initially with the iPad.

The Elec reiterates that Apple plans to launch its first iPad models with OLED displays in 2024. A previous report called for the launch of the first MacBooks with OLED displays in 2025, dependent on the success of the rumored 11- and 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro models.
