Greens: Improvements for an equal approach to parenthood and rights in the workplace were decided today

Vienna (OTS) The legislative proposal for improvements in the compatibility of family and work, which was introduced in the National Council in June and passed today, Wednesday, contains a number of innovations that are intended to enable a modern, equal approach to parenthood and a better compatibility with working life.

“We want to get to the point where in the future it will no longer be the question of whether the waiting period is divided, but rather the question of how this time should be divided as a partnership. We will therefore reserve two months for fathers in the maternity leave model. A simple ‘I don’t want to’ will no longer be possible in the future. We have provided exceptions for everyone for whom this is not possible because the second parent is not entitled to parental leave, such as single parents, self-employed people and cross-border commuters. We are also expanding protection once morest discrimination for everyone who takes parental leave, daddy month or care leave, so that we can also take away the fear of disadvantages in professional life for new dads. “These diverse measures will make it even easier for fathers to get more involved and take on responsibility,” say the Green Party’s women’s spokesperson and deputy club leader, Meri Disoski, and the Green Party’s family spokesperson, Barbara Neßler, who are pleased with the decision.

The implementation of the so-called EU Compatibility Directive comes at the same time as the announced 4.5 billion euros that are to flow into child care nationwide by 2030. “We are once once more proving that with the Greens in government, improvements for women and families are not only being demanded, but also being implemented. If people in Austria become parents from November 1, 2023, they will not only have expanded options such as parental leave until the child’s 8th birthday, leave to care for close relatives outside their own household and better protection once morest dismissal or discrimination in the workplace. With the 4.5 billion euros in expanding childcare options nearby, they now have the opportunity to decide for or once morest childcare because there will finally be an option for it. This is another important milestone in the private and economic equality of women in Austria,” emphasizes Disoski.

“In Austria, women are still far too naturally responsible for raising children. That has to be changed. With this package we are creating framework conditions so that fathers can participate in raising children as early and as equitably as possible. Many families simply mightn’t afford to take advantage of Father’s Month, but this time, which is beneficial for everyone, must not be allowed to fail because of money. We are therefore doubling the fee to around 1,480 euros. This not only applies to future births, but will also be paid out retroactively for births from August 1st,” says Neßler.
