Disney reused Apple Watch animations to advertise “Toy Story 5”

Owners of Apple Watches who followed the 2024 edition of D23 — annual event of The Walt Disney Company in which the company usually announces its upcoming releases — noticed something quite familiar when the film “Toy Story 5” was announced (and which was also shown during an event of Apple seven years ago).

It turns out that, to present the new adventure of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and company, Disney showed a small teaser with the release date of the new film, which should hit theaters around the world in the winter (in the southern hemisphere) of 2026. This video features, in addition to these two classic characters, Jessie and an alien (the one with the claw) making faces and waving to the viewer — all while the logo of the new film and its release date are highlighted in the background.

The detail that caused controversy here was precisely the animations of these characters used in the teaser. Those who pay close attention will notice that they are the exact same animations made for the franchise’s themed watch face introduced with watchOS 4 in 2017.

I stole the idea from a friend, but yes, these are literally just the animations for the Toy Story Apple Watch face from watchOS 4. 💀
They even look like they had their background edited

As well demonstrated by Dylan [@DylanMcD8] In the tweet above, except for the part where we see Buzz Lightyear running out of the frame, all the animations present in the video can also be seen on the Apple Watch: Woody running and waving to the user; Buzz Lightyear appearing in the corner of the screen and giving a salute; and, finally, Jessie running towards the user and winking one of her eyes.

It is possible that the production of “Toy Story 5” is still in a very early stage, which may have motivated Disney to reuse these animations. Another possible (and likely) explanation is that the company simply decided to save time and money, considering that we are talking about just an advertising video.

It seems that Disney didn’t count on the watchful eye of Apple fans, right? 😜
