During Disney’s latest earnings call, Disney boss Bob Iger revealed that the company will update its terms and services to address password sharing sometime in 2024.
We are actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family. Later this year, we will begin to update our subscriber agreements with additional terms and our sharing policies, and implement tactics to drive monetization sometime in 2024.
Aside from Iger confirming that the company is “actively exploring” the idea of addressing password sharing, no additional information – such as pricing or exact timelines – was revealed during the presentation.
As if the changes in the password sharing system weren’t bad enough, the executive also revealed that they are already planning a new increase in the price of subscriptions to the service in the US. Boosts are for the ad-free plan (service replaced by Star Plus in Brazil).
Starting October 12, ad-free Disney Plus will cost $13.99. This represents a $3 increase from the current price.
Meanwhile, the ad-free plan subscription on Hulu will also increase by $3 per month, going from $14.99 to $17.99.
In our pricing strategy for this year, we raised prices in nearly 50 countries around the world to better reflect the value of our product offerings, and the impact on churn and retention has exceeded our expectations. Later today, we’ll be releasing details on upcoming streaming price increases… Keeping access to our content for the widest possible audience is most important to us. That’s why pricing on our Disney plus and Hulu offerings with standalone ads will remain unchanged.
Brazil is one of the countries that does not have cheaper options (with advertisements) for Disney services.
It is worth remembering that Disney Plus and Star Plus also increased the price of their subscriptions in Brazil in April this year, which means that a new increase might take effect later this year.
Do you intend to continue subscribing to Disney services if there is a new increase in the value of subscriptions?
