The new animated film Disney Pixar was released in cinemas a few days ago, on June 16 in the United States and on June 21 in Italy, and has already confirmed itself – as indeed was expected – an example of innovation and avant-garde.

Elementalas the new feature film directed by Peter Sohn is called, has in fact introduced its first non-binary character.

In recent years, Pixar, through the animated films it has produced, has always taken a stand on particularly relevant social issues.

be with Soul made the choice to introduce a black protagonist for the first time, Pixar has been trying to open up for some time to the topic of sexuality.

In fact, in 2021, a non-binary character Raine Whispers appeared for the first time in the series “The Owl House”, presented with the pronouns they/them. Even earlier, in “Onward”, the character of the officer Specter, is a lesbian. She remains iconic following the first same-sex kiss in “Lightyear”.

All these examples obviously represent only the beginning of a path that the production company intends to carry on by making inclusion (even more) its own vision.

In fact, the company’s stance takes on even more value given that in Hollywood there is a real lack of representations of non-binary characters.

Elemental and the character of Lake Ripple

Elemental is the story of a city inhabited by characters from water, fire, air and earth which interact with each other to demonstrate that two opposite poles can actually have a lot in common.

The film already represents an important release in itself because for the first time, in a long time, it will debut only in the cinema and not in parallel also on Disney +.

Lake Ripple is one of the characters in the film and, as the name suggests, represents the element of water.

Voiced by Ava Hauser, Lake is a character non-binary, has a girlfriend and is the brother of secondary protagonist, Wade Ripple.

Although Lake does not have a leading role in the film, his presence is clearly very significant not only for members of the LGBTQIA+ community who will be able to see themselves represented on the big screen in the various generations, but for all those who believe in change in act and in the values of inclusion and diversity.

The crisis of Pixar and the challenge of Elemental

Pixar is facing a further challenge: for some years now, in fact, the layoffs and other difficulties had highlighted the deep crisis that the company was experiencing.

Elemental, despite its creative and activist drive, is the worst debut in Pixar history. The film earned just $28 million in its opening weekend in the United States.

If many are appreciating it, for others, on the other hand, it is a film that thrives on uncertainties and is content to take the safest path, bowing to the logic of the market and failing from an economic point of view.
