Dismissal of Alain Giresse as Coach of Kosovo National Team after Defeat: Euro-2024 Qualifiers Update

2023-06-20 19:59:52

Frenchman Alain Giresse was dismissed from his position as coach of the Kosovo national team the day following the defeat (2-1) conceded in Belarus, announced the Kosovo Federation (KFF).

“By mutual agreement with coach Alain Giresse, it has been decided to end the cooperation,” KFF said in a statement.

This decision comes as the selection has not won a single one of its four matches since the start of qualifying for Euro-2024. They will be Switzerland’s next opponent on September 9 in the Group I qualifiers, in which Kosovo sit second-bottom with three points from four matches.

Before taking charge of the Kosovo team, Giresse, 70, previously coached Tunisia, Mali, Senegal, Gabon and Georgia. He had succeeded the Swiss Bernard Challandes, sacked at the end of 2021 following a disastrous campaign during the World Cup qualifiers.

Kosovo became a member of UEFA and FIFA in 2016, eight years following declaring independence from Serbia.
