Discussions on the creation of a common currency for the BRICS must continue, although its introduction is not immediately feasible, launched Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian President.

A few weeks before the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, the Kremlin is broaching the subject of the creation of a common currency for use by the five members of the group. For Dmitri Peskov, discussions on the subject will continue, although nothing is concrete immediately:

“It’s hard to do, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be discussed. Discussions on this will of course continue.”

Dream of a “clean currency” in the BRICS

Among the strong supporters of the idea is Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. At the end of May, he said he dreamed “that the BRICS would have their own currency, like the European Union has the Euro”.

The issue of creating a common currency with a view to reducing the use of the dollar is “quite complex”, admitted the spokesman for the South African presidency Vincent Magwenya at the end of June. Nevertheless, discussions on this are ongoing within the BRICS.

Transactions in national currencies

Currently, it is a question of “increasing the number of transactions in national currencies”, indicated during the recent Russia-Africa summit Dilma Rousseff, boss of the New Development Bank of the BRICS. This will strengthen the markets of the members of the bank.

She pointed out that this is one of the main priorities of the BRICS bank.
