PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT Mahmoud Abbas visited Ankara on Wednesday (14/8) to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and highlight Israel’s attacks on Gaza (Palestine Israel).

The two presidents met at the Presidential Complex in the Turkish capital, where the two leaders held closed-door meetings that were not open to the press.

Abbas will address the Turkish parliament on Thursday (August 15) during an extraordinary session held to show support for the Palestinian cause. President Erdogan will attend the session and show strong support for Palestine.

Abbas will highlight Israel’s attacks on the Palestinian territories, especially Gaza, in his speech. Abbas’ speech will be translated simultaneously into English, Turkish and French.

Ignoring UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international condemnation but has continued its bombardment of Gaza since Hamas’ offensive on October 7 last year.

The Israeli offensive has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in Gaza and injured more than 92,000, according to local health authorities. More than 10 months since the war, much of Gaza has been devastated amid a crippling blockade that has cut off access to food, clean water and medicine.

Israel has been accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The ICJ in its latest ruling ordered Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah, the southern city where more than a million Palestinians sought refuge from the war before they were attacked on May 6.
