George Floyd case: Report denounces systemic discrimination in the police force

St. Paul.Almost two years following the death of black George Floyd in Minneapolis, a new report has denounced abuses in the police force in the US metropolis. There was a real culture of discrimination there, according to the report presented on Wednesday by the Institute for Human Rights in Minnesota. In the use of force, traffic controls, searches and arrests, the officials proceeded very differently depending on the skin color of those affected.

“This investigation is not regarding an individual or an incident,” Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero said at a press conference. The report called on police and city officials to improve internal controls, officer training and communication.

The investigation began shortly following Floyd’s death during a police operation at the end of May 2020. At the time, a white police officer pressed his knee on the black man’s neck for nine and a half minutes. Video recordings of this caused protests once morest racism and police violence worldwide. Police officer Derek Chauvin was later sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison for killing Floyd.
